A new report analyzing over 10,000 closed claims from senior living and long-term care providers offers key insights into the growing risks and costs facing these facilities. The study covers 243,000 care units and $1.87 billion in paid claims over the last decade. For 2024, senior living facilities are expected to see a 0.6% increase in claim frequency, a 3.8% rise in claim severity, and a 4.4% increase in loss rates. Long-term care (e.g., nursing homes) shows a similar trend, with a 0.3% increase in frequency, 3.7% in severity, and 4.0% in loss rates.

Falls remain the leading cause of claims in both settings, while wound-related issues are especially common in long-term care. Alarmingly, wounds are also on the rise in senior living, suggesting the need for stronger risk management and early intervention. Abuse is the second leading cause of claims in senior living, highlighting the need for better resident screening and behavior management.
For male patients dealing with urinary incontinence—many of whom live in these settings—this report stresses the importance of proactive care, fall prevention, and dignity-preserving solutions like high-quality absorbent products. The trend data also underscores the growing need for safer environments and individualized care plans.
