The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) faces fresh scrutiny after allegedly covering up an internal review exposing ongoing failures to act on serious allegations against nurses and midwives. Calls for a parliamentary inquiry have intensified as the NMC refuses to publish findings that highlight persistent safeguarding issues.
A 2023 investigation by Nazir Afzal KC revealed the NMC’s toxic culture, lack of transparency, and failure to act on cases of sexual misconduct and child abuse. Despite this, the latest internal review reportedly confirms similar shortcomings, raising concerns about patient safety.
Whistleblower Sam Foster, the NMC’s executive safeguarding lead, is now absent from work, adding to fears of retaliation against those speaking out. Two other whistleblowers left after raising safety concerns.
Critics, including campaigners and NHS expert Roger Kline, condemn the NMC’s lack of transparency. Afzal warns the regulator has failed to grasp the need for accountability, calling for further scrutiny. The Department of Health and Social Care insists on firm action, while the Professional Standards Authority reviews the NMC’s performance.
Despite public outcry, the NMC remains reluctant to disclose key reports, stating it will provide only limited safeguarding updates. Campaigners demand government intervention to restore trust and ensure patient safety.
