AI Toilet Camera Brings New Era of Gut Health Monitoring

Throne Science, an Austin-based health technology startup, has raised $10 million in Series A funding to expand its AI-powered toilet camera designed to monitor gut health, hydration, and urinary function. Founded in 2023, the company aims to address a major gap in personal health tracking by creating a “smoke detector for colorectal cancer,” according to CEO Scott Hickle.

While wearable devices commonly track sleep, exercise, heart rate, and metabolic health, digestive and urinary health remain largely unmonitored. Throne’s device attaches beneath the toilet seat and uses artificial intelligence and computer vision to analyze waste characteristics and provide personalized health insights after each use. The system can identify individual users through Bluetooth technology while maintaining privacy for guests.

The device combines AI-based analysis with a health coaching platform that helps users understand patterns related to diet, stress, sleep, travel, and lifestyle factors. It is designed for individuals managing digestive issues, health-conscious users tracking wellness trends, and families monitoring older adults or children with special needs.

Available for $399 with an additional subscription fee, Throne plans to use the new funding for research and development, clinical validation, and consumer education. The company hopes its technology will enable earlier detection of health concerns and make bathroom-based monitoring a routine part of preventive healthcare.
