The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has delayed enforcement of the new “Wheelchair Rule,” initially set to begin in January, now pushed to at least August 1, 2025. This rule, finalized under the Biden administration, aims to improve air travel for passengers with disabilities by requiring annual training for airline staff who assist or handle wheelchairs and by mandating safe and dignified treatment. It also makes any damage or delay of a wheelchair an automatic violation of the Air Carrier Access Act. However, enforcement has been postponed due to ongoing legal challenges from major U.S. airlines and a review to ensure compliance with the 2024 FAA Act and current administration policies. With about 5.5 million Americans using wheelchairs—and roughly 1 in 100 devices damaged or delayed during flights—this rule could significantly impact travelers with mobility issues, including many men dealing with incontinence who rely on wheelchairs or scooters when flying.
