Many men are now using AI chatbots for advice on finances, work problems, relationships, health concerns, and even legal questions. But legal experts are warning that AI should not be treated like a private conversation with a lawyer.
The concern increased after a recent U.S. court decision involving a former executive accused of financial crimes. The judge ruled that documents created through AI conversations could potentially be obtained and used in legal proceedings. Unlike discussions with attorneys, chats with AI systems generally do not receive attorney-client privilege protections.
Law firms are now warning clients that sharing legal strategies, private details, or even repeating advice from attorneys inside AI tools could create problems. In some situations, this might even weaken legal protections that normally keep lawyer-client conversations confidential.
AI tools can be useful for research, organization, and general information, but experts emphasize that they are still tools—not personal advisers. Privacy policies for AI platforms may allow user data to be shared under certain circumstances.
The current message from legal professionals is straightforward: if the information could seriously affect your freedom, finances, or legal situation, discuss it with your lawyer rather than relying on a chatbot.
