Study Finds Reusable Catheters May Be a Safe and Cost-Effective Alternative

A recent study presented at the 41st European Association of Urology Congress suggests that reusable catheters may offer a safe and cost-effective alternative to single-use catheters for people performing clean intermittent catheterization. In the COMPaRE trial, 386 patients with urinary retention were randomly assigned to use either single-use catheters or reusable catheters designed to last two weeks.

Researchers found no significant difference in the rate of urinary tract infections (UTIs) between the two groups, indicating that reusable catheters were not inferior to single-use devices in terms of infection risk. Rates of serious catheter-related complications were also comparable. However, mild adverse events, particularly urethral irritation, were reported more frequently among patients using reusable catheters, contributing to higher discontinuation rates during the first six weeks.

Despite these challenges, reusable catheter users reported better catheter-related quality of life and greater convenience, while single-use catheter users expressed higher satisfaction due to easier handling. Reusable catheters were also found to be more cost-effective. Researchers noted that further studies are needed to optimize catheter materials, cleaning methods, and storage solutions before widespread recommendations can be made.
