Many older adults deal with faecal and urinary incontinence, which can cause incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD)—an irritating skin condition marked by redness, sores, and discomfort. Limited mobility makes it harder for vulnerable elders to get help quickly, increasing the risk. A research team at Thammasat University in Thailand has developed a new system to tackle this problem: the IAD-alert system (IAD-AS), which recently won a Gold Medal at the 49th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva.

The IAD-AS uses smart sensors placed on mattresses to detect humidity changes that suggest incontinence. It immediately sends alerts to caregivers, allowing fast action to prevent skin damage. But it doesn’t stop there—the system also offers a full care platform with web tools for doctors, a mobile app for patients, a chatbot for support, and cloud-based data storage. Communication tools like Line ensure patients and caregivers stay connected easily.

The benefits are huge: early intervention reduces IAD risk, communication improves, and care becomes more personalized. The IAD-AS is a strong example of how smart tech can change eldercare for the better—offering more comfort, faster responses, and better health outcomes for older adults who need it most.
