A recent investigation by ABC reporters Elise Kinsella and Dunja Karagic highlights growing concerns about fraud and misuse within Australia’s National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), a program designed to support people with disabilities in daily life and community participation. Insiders and participants report that fraudulent activity has increased significantly in recent years, with funds being siphoned through overbilling, false claims, and services that were never delivered.

One example involves a mother in Western Australia who closely monitors her 13-year-old son’s NDIS plan after discovering that providers allegedly billed over $250,000 in less than two years for questionable or non-existent services. She reported charges for care on days when no support was provided, including Sundays and public holidays. Although one provider claimed the issue was a “typographical error,” the family has since cancelled services and filed complaints with regulators.

Experts and disability advocates suggest these cases are not isolated. Reports indicate that misuse may include overcharging, identity theft, coercion of participants, and even manipulation of vulnerable individuals to switch providers. Some insiders claim that fraud has become increasingly organized, involving systematic exploitation of participant plans.

Estimates from officials suggest that billions of dollars in NDIS funding may be affected by “integrity leakage,” including fraud and non-compliance. In response, the Australian government has announced plans to tighten regulations and improve oversight, aiming to reduce abuse while maintaining support for people who rely on the scheme.
