Prostate cancer significantly affects men’s lives, being the second most common and deadly cancer after skin and lung cancer. Treatments like surgery, radiation, hormone therapy, and chemotherapy often cause distressing side effects, including urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction, and loss of libido, impacting both patients and their partners. A large survey by Europa Uomo revealed major gaps in communication between healthcare providers and patients, with many partners reporting they were not properly informed about treatment consequences. Emotional strain, depression, anxiety, and PTSD are common among caregivers, sometimes more so than in patients themselves. Studies also show that prostate cancer deeply affects relationships, intimacy, and overall quality of life. Experts emphasize the need for better support services, more open conversations about sexual health, and involving partners in treatment discussions. Personal stories highlight that managing prostate cancer is often a "couple’s journey," requiring emotional resilience, open communication, and proactive healthcare engagement. While some relationships grow stronger through the experience, the emotional and psychological toll remains profound. Early, honest information from healthcare teams is critical for preparing patients and their partners for the realities of living with prostate cancer and its long-term effects, especially regarding incontinence and intimacy.
