A recent study highlights the benefits of an online fall-prevention program for older men who rely on wheelchairs or scooters. Falls are a significant risk for elderly men with mobility limitations, including those living with conditions like multiple sclerosis (MS). Each year, about one in four older adults experience falls, which can lead to injury, loss of confidence, and reduced participation in community life.
Researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign tested the Individualized Reduction of Falls (iROLL) program, a six-week online course designed to teach fall-prevention strategies and post-fall management. The program included prerecorded videos on wheelchair skills, safe transfers, and seated balance exercises, supplemented by small group sessions led by physical or occupational therapists.
In a pilot study with 12 adults with MS, participants reported significantly reduced fear of falling and improved knowledge of fall prevention (P < .01 and P = .03, respectively). These results suggest that online interventions can effectively support independence and confidence in men who use mobility devices.
Clinicians note that while online programs are broadly feasible, success depends on individual factors such as cognitive status, medical history, and access to technology. For elderly men with mobility challenges, iROLL and similar programs offer a low-cost, accessible approach to reducing fall risk, maintaining independence, and improving overall quality of life.
