A growing public petition is calling on the UK government to reconsider its current approach to prostate cancer screening and introduce a targeted screening programme for men at high risk. The initiative urges policymakers to reassess the draft recommendation from the UK National Screening Committee, which currently proposes screening only for men who carry BRCA1 or BRCA2 genetic variants.

Prostate cancer remains the most commonly diagnosed cancer among men in the United Kingdom, yet there is still no national screening programme. Supporters of the petition argue that the current analysis places too much emphasis on the potential harms of screening, such as overdiagnosis or unnecessary treatment, while failing to fully recognize the benefits of early detection. According to advocates, modern diagnostic practices have significantly reduced many of these risks.

The petition proposes beginning with targeted screening for high-risk groups, including men with a strong family history or known genetic susceptibility. Proponents believe this approach could serve as the foundation for a broader national screening strategy in the future.

Early detection of prostate cancer is widely recognized as a key factor in improving survival rates and treatment outcomes. As of now, the petition has gathered more than 46,000 signatures. If it reaches 100,000 signatures, it will be considered for debate in the UK Parliament, potentially influencing future health policy decisions.
