Nurse Reprimanded for Elderly Patient Mistreatment

A nurse in Queenstown, Peter Graham Dickerson, has been officially reprimanded and temporarily banned from practicing after multiple incidents of aggressive behavior toward elderly patients, including those with serious conditions like Parkinson’s disease and dementia. In one case, he physically pushed a frail resident and later forced him onto a bed. Another earlier incident in 2019 involved unsafe handling of a patient with dementia, causing the patient to fall. Mr. Dickerson was also cited for verbally aggressive and unprofessional communication toward both patients and staff.

Although criminal charges were dropped, the Nursing and Midwifery Board found his actions amounted to professional misconduct. He accepted disciplinary actions, including a formal reprimand and a temporary disqualification from reapplying for registration. The tribunal emphasized the importance of treating vulnerable elderly patients with dignity, care, and respect, especially those who cannot speak up for themselves.
