NHS Incontinence Care Postcode Lottery: Patients Face Up to 76-Week Waits for Specialist Support
New Freedom of Information data reveals a staggering "postcode lottery" in NHS adult continence care across England, with patients facing waiting times of up to 76 weeks for initial specialist assessments. While some individuals are seen within days, major backlogs plague numerous trusts—such as Sheffield Teaching Hospitals reporting a 76-week delay and several trusts managing thousands of patients on waiting lists.
Affecting millions in the UK, poorly managed bladder and bowel conditions profoundly disrupt daily life, work, mental health, and independence, while risking severe complications like urinary tract infections and skin damage. Campaigners note that many continence issues are entirely treatable or manageable with timely specialist intervention.
Beyond long appointment queues, trusts have also faced service cuts and restrictions on essential products like absorbent pads. Health experts and advocacy groups are urging a consistent national approach to eliminate arbitrary limits, improve care access, and prevent avoidable hardship for patients and their caregivers.
