New Blood Test May Detect Testicular Cancer Missed by Standard Screening Methods

Researchers at Mayo Clinic have developed a promising new blood test that may improve the detection of testicular cancer, particularly in cases missed by current standard testing methods. The study, published in Nature Communications, focused on germ cell tumors, the most common type of testicular cancer affecting adolescents and young adult men.

Testicular cancer is considered highly treatable when diagnosed early, but some tumors do not produce enough traditional tumor markers to appear on routine blood tests. This can delay diagnosis and treatment. To address this problem, researchers created a new blood-based test called GCT-iSIGN, which analyzes thousands of immune system signals in the blood simultaneously.

In a study involving 427 blood samples, the test successfully identified 93% of patients with germ cell tumors and correctly ruled out cancer in 99% of people without the disease. Importantly, the new method detected 23 out of 24 cancer cases that standard blood tests failed to identify.

Researchers also developed a second test, Sem-iSIGN, which helps distinguish between different forms of testicular cancer, allowing doctors to choose more personalized treatment approaches. Experts say the findings could lead to faster and more accurate diagnosis for men with suspected testicular cancer, although additional research is still needed before the test becomes widely available in everyday clinical practice.
