Many men avoid visiting a urologist, often tolerating uncomfortable or even painful symptoms instead of seeking help. However, as Dr. Barckley Storey, a board-certified urologist, reminds us—eventually, most men will need urological care. His straightforward yet empathetic approach encourages men to prioritize their health before symptoms worsen.
Urologists like Dr. Storey treat a wide range of conditions, not just prostate problems. These include kidney stones, painful urination, poor bladder control, overactive bladder, blood in urine, male sexual dysfunction, hernias, and urological cancers. While the idea of visiting a urologist might be intimidating, procedures such as cystoscopy—used to examine the bladder and urethra—are minimally invasive and often take under a minute.
Dr. Storey emphasizes that common conditions like benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and urinary incontinence won’t resolve on their own. In fact, untreated symptoms may lead to complications or missed diagnoses, such as bladder or prostate cancer. He also highlights that risk factors like diabetes and smoking can contribute to urologic issues, including urgency, frequency, and even bladder cancer.
Technological advancements in urology, such as robotic surgery and laser treatments, allow for quicker, more effective solutions. In many cases, a short procedure can reduce or even eliminate the need for ongoing medications.
The takeaway: don’t wait. Urologists are trained to handle sensitive health concerns with care and discretion. If you're experiencing any urinary symptoms or discomfort, taking action early can significantly improve your quality of life. There’s no shame in seeking help—only strength in doing so.
