Former UK Prime Minister David Cameron has urged men to prioritize prostate cancer checks after revealing his own diagnosis last year. He discovered the disease at age 59, encouraged by his wife Samantha following an interview about another man's cancer journey. Now cancer-free, Cameron is using his platform to raise awareness as prostate cancer has become the most common tumour in England, with over 55,000 men diagnosed in 2023—surpassing breast cancer cases.
The rise in diagnoses, especially after the Covid pandemic, highlights the need for early detection. Despite this, the NHS does not provide routine screening. Men with symptoms are usually offered a PSA blood test, while those aged 50 and over can request one even without symptoms—though many remain unaware.
Risk increases significantly with age, and black men face double the risk. Family history also raises the likelihood of developing the disease. Key early symptoms include frequent urination, especially at night, urgency, weak flow, straining, and incomplete bladder emptying. Advanced disease may cause back or bone pain, fatigue, and unexplained weight loss.
Lifestyle factors such as obesity may increase risk, while physical activity can be protective. Cameron hopes his openness will encourage men to seek timely testing and take charge of their health.
