Cancer remains one of the leading health threats, affecting over a third of people in their lifetime. Early detection significantly improves outcomes, but many men overlook key warning signs. Here are five commonly ignored symptoms that could point to cancer and warrant immediate medical attention:
Persistent Cough – A cough lasting more than three weeks, especially if it worsens or includes chest pain or shortness of breath, may be a sign of lung cancer. It’s crucial not to dismiss it as just a cold or flu.
Changes in Bowel Habits – Diarrhoea, blood in stools, bloating, or a constant urge to empty the bowels could indicate bowel cancer. Any such changes lasting several weeks should prompt a GP visit.
Unexplained Bleeding – Blood in urine can signal bladder or prostate cancer, while rectal bleeding could be linked to bowel cancer. Blood in vomit, cough, or unusual bleeding elsewhere also deserves urgent evaluation.
Sudden Weight Loss – Losing more than 5% of body weight in 6–12 months without trying may be an early sign of pancreatic, stomach, oesophageal, or lung cancer.
Changing Moles – Irregular, large, bleeding, or color-changing moles can be signs of skin cancer like melanoma. Men should regularly check their skin and consult a doctor about any changes.
Ignoring these symptoms could delay diagnosis. Men are encouraged to prioritize regular health checks and act quickly if these signs appear. Early action can save lives.
